2010 Region X VPPPA Annual Conference

The 16th Annual Region X Chapter VPPPA Conference was held at the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska on May 11th – 13th 2010. The theme was “VPP - North to Alaska!”. This was the first time the regional conference was held in Alaska and it was a great success! Approximately 275 persons were in attendance. Many great workshops and sessions were held, as well as pre-conference activities. The 3rd Annual Region X Golf Tournament was held at Moose Run Golf Course. The weather was windy but beautiful and a great time was had by all. Pre-conference sessions included a "VPP Application Workshop™". The keynote and general session speaker was Bruce Wilkinson, CSP. Bruce spoke about "Choosing Your Attitude: Taking Personal Responsibility for Success at Work™ ". The conference sessions were well attended, and were developed along four tracks including: VPP Basics, Technical Track, Injury Reduction, and Emergency Preparedness. There was also a workshop related to Safety Trained Supervisor. The theme for the reception was “North to Alaska” and attendees were encouraged to dress accordingly. Congratulations to all who participated!Board of Directors elections were held with the following winners: Chapter Chair - Bonnie Anderson of CH2M WG Idaho LLC; Labor Representative from a Non-Union Site - Kemmer Sorrell of Conoco Phillips Alaska, Inc.; Director at Large - Jeff Carlson of Conoco Phillips Alaska, Inc.; and Director at Large - Chris Thursby of CH2MHILL Plateau Remediation Company.

OSHA’s VPP Will Continue to Thrive

FALLS CHURCH, VA – The Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association, Inc. (VPPPA) released a video message (http://www.vpppa.org/pubs/EDMessage.cfm) today, February 4, 2010, in response to concerns about the future of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). President Obama’s recently released proposed budget for fiscal year 2011 and an ensuing live chat by Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and OSHA Assistant Secretary Dr. David Michaels raised questions among VPP participants, which the association aims to address.
