On May 13 - 15, 2008, two hundred and eighty safety leaders gathered at the Sun Valley Resort in Sun Valley, ID. For three days, these safety leaders shared information, techniques, and ideas for increasing the safety of workers thoughout Region X.
Richard Hawk discussed the Future of Safety, Darth Tater taught attendees how to lead by example, ConocoPhillips shared methods of working safely in extreme temperatures, and benefits of VPP were amoung the many topics shared.

First what is the VPPPA?

The Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association (VPPPA), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is a leader in safety, health and environmental excellence through cooperative efforts among labor, management and government.

As part of its efforts to share the benefits of cooperative programs, the VPPPA works closely with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), OSHA state-plan-states, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the development and implementation of cooperative programs within the agencies. The Association provides expertise to these groups in the form of comments and stakeholder feedback on agency rulemakings and policies. The VPPPA also offers comments and testimony to members of Congress regarding legislation on safety and health issues.

The Voluntary Protection Program is designed to recognize and promote effective safety and health management. VPP participants are a select group of facilities that have designed and implemented outstanding health and safety programs. Management, labor and government work together to establish a cooperative relationship at a workplace that has implemented a strong program in VPP.
